What camera repair costs
Independent shops that publish price lists — Precision Camera and Brooklyn Film Camera among them — land in a narrow band. Use these as the sanity check on any quote you are given:

Bench fees: ask before you hand it over
Nearly every shop charges to diagnose. Bench and estimate fees run $24–85. Some credit that fee toward the repair if you approve the work; others keep it whatever you decide. That is a $85 swing on the same job, and it is never on the website.
Two questions, asked in this order, before you leave the camera: "What is the bench fee?" and "Do you credit it toward the repair?" For reference on how expensive declining can get: KEH charges $100 for a declined re-estimate.
In-house or "we send it out"
This is the single most useful question you can ask a repair counter. A shop that works on your camera in-house quotes you directly, controls its own queue, and can call you when it opens the body up. A shop that sends it out is a courier with a markup — and a send-out typically adds 4–6 weeks to the job on top of the actual repair time.
Neither is dishonest. Plenty of good camera stores send specialist work to specialist benches, which is better than attempting it badly. But you deserve to know which one you are buying before you agree to a timeline, and you should price a send-out against taking it straight to the specialist yourself.
Independent shop vs manufacturer service
- Independents run 20–40% cheaper than manufacturer service centers for the same job, and are generally faster.
- Expect 2–4 weeks at an independent, depending entirely on their current backlog. Ask what the backlog is when you book — a good shop will tell you straight.
- Use the manufacturer for in-warranty work, very new bodies with restricted parts, and jobs needing factory alignment jigs.
- Use an independent for shutters, apertures, light seals, fungus, CLAs and anything on a film body — which the manufacturers largely stopped servicing years ago.
When a repair is not worth paying for
- Point-and-shoots. Parts are unavailable and the labor alone runs past what the camera is worth. A working replacement is almost always the cheaper answer.
- Any quote above the body's used value. If the fix costs $300 and clean copies sell for $250, you are paying a premium to own a repaired one.
- Etched fungus. Removal is $78–228, but once the fungus has eaten into the coating, cleaning it does not bring the contrast back.
- Gray-market bodies at manufacturer service. Nikon will refuse to service gray imports at any price — not "for a fee", not "out of warranty". An independent shop is your only route.
The corollary: a clean-and-check at $25–58 is the cheapest information you can buy. Pay for the diagnosis, then decide whether the repair makes sense — and if it does not, find out what the body is worth as-is before you bin it.

- Will Nikon or Canon service a gray-market camera?
- Nikon will not. A gray-market body — one imported outside the manufacturer's official channel — is refused at Nikon service at any price, in or out of warranty, and no amount of paying cash changes that. It is the strongest argument for finding a good independent shop, since they will happily work on gear regardless of where it was imported. Check the serial number and importer paperwork before you buy a suspiciously cheap body, not after.
