- How do I find a camera store near me?
- Start with your state, then your city — every city page lists the local camera shops, film labs and repair benches with addresses, hours and ratings, sorted by reputation. If you already know what you need done, the service pages are faster: film developing, camera repair, used cameras or gear rental will only show you places where there is evidence they actually offer it.
- What can a local camera store do that Amazon or B&H cannot?
- Three things, mainly. You can hold the camera before you buy it — grip, weight and viewfinder are hard to judge from a spec sheet. You can hand over a repair, a roll of film or a box of your grandfather's slides and talk to the person who will actually work on it. And you can sell or trade your old gear on the spot instead of packing, shipping and waiting a week for an online quote that may drop once it is inspected. The trade-off is honest: a local shop usually cannot beat a national retailer on the sticker price of a brand-new body.
- Where can I get film developed?
- A dedicated film lab or a camera store with an in-house lab. Expect roughly $5–12 for develop-only and $16–35 for develop plus scans on a standard 35mm colour roll; black-and-white and E-6 slide film cost more because they are processed separately. Drugstore counters are cheaper on paper but usually ship your film out, return low-resolution scans, and often do not give the negatives back. - Is it worth repairing an old camera?
- It depends on what the body is worth. A clean-and-check runs about $25–58 and a full overhaul $278–378, so a $150 film SLR is rarely worth a teardown, while a $2,000 digital body almost always is. Most shops charge a bench or estimate fee of $24–85 to open the camera and quote the job; some credit it against the repair and some do not, so ask before you leave it.
